Armenian Embassy receives Heritage Designation Plaque from the City of Ottawa

19 February, 2008

The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Canada was presented with a Heritage Designation Plaque at the annual Architectural Conservation Awards and Heritage Recognition Ceremony, held at Ottawa City Hall on February 19, 2008. The Embassy building was designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act in September 2007, upon request of the Armenian Embassy and recommendation of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee and Planning and Environment Committee.

Mr. Arman Akopian, Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Armenia in Canada, also received the framed Letter of Appreciation signed by Mayor Larry O’Brien. The letter commends the Armenian Embassy for its active participation in the preservation of the cultural heritage of Ottawa. The interpretive bilingual bronze plaque will be installed on the Embassy later this year in recognition of the unique cultural and architectural value of the historical mansion at 7 Delaware.

“Ottawa is one of the greatest and most attractive cities in the world,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “What makes it so great is in very large part defined by the projects that the City is honouring tonight, projects which have built on Ottawa’s existing heritage character. What is also remarkable is the exceptional representation from all parts of the City, and the commitment of all the builders, owners and architects that continue to make this city so special.”

Built in 1907, the Armenian Embassy building was later remodelled by a renowned Canadian architect Werner Noffke. In March 1995 this historical mansion became the Armenian Embassy in Canada.
