Armenian Embassy participates in Doors Open Ottawa 2008

07 June, 2008

On June 7, 2008, the Armenian Embassy for the first time participated in Doors Open Ottawa, a city wide event that provides an opportunity for local residents and tourists to visit the city’s most remarkable historical and architectural buildings. This year 112 buildings, including embassies, museums, places of worship and other institutions, opened their doors to the public.

Some 600 people visited the Armenian Embassy during the event and had a chance to see the building’s unique architecture and interior. The century-old Spanish Colonial Revival-style building, the only one of this style in Ottawa, has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in September 2007 upon the initiative of the Armenian Embassy.

The Embassy staff and volunteers from the Armenian Students Association of Ottawa welcomed the visitors and provided information about the history and design of the building. They also answered numerous questions about the Armenian history and culture. A video presentation about Armenia, prepared specially for the event, was of a particular interest for the guests, who also received booklets and other printed materials about Armenian ancient and current history.

Two days earlier, the Armenian Embassy hosted the launch ceremony of the Doors Open Ottawa 2008 and the media conference. Deputy Mayor and city councillor Diane Holmes launched the event. She especially thanked the Armenian Embassy for its active participation in the preservation of Ottawa’s architectural and historic heritage, as well as for hosting the opening ceremony and the media conference. Arman Akopian, Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Armenia in Canada, welcomed the guests.

Ottawa City Hall officials, journalists and representatives of organizations and institutions participating in Doors Open Ottawa 2008 were present at the ceremony. The information about the event was broadcasted by local and national TV channels, including A-channel, CBC and CTV.
