Mayor of Montreal Visited Yerevan

30 October, 2010

Upon the invitation of Gagik Beglarian, Mayor of Yerevan, an official delegation of the city of Montreal, headed by Mayor Gérald Tremblay, visited the Armenian capital on October 28-29, 2010. After a working meeting at the Municipality of Yerevan, Mayors Beglarian and Tremblay signed a Memorandum of Understanding, according to which St. Michel Environmental Complex of Montreal will assist the establishment of a similar facility in Yerevan.

After the signing ceremony Mayor Tremblay said that the Memorandum was an actual expression of the friendly relations between Armenia and Canada, and it would give a new impetus to the cooperation established between Yerevan and Montreal.

Mayors Begarian and Tremblay discussed issues pertaining to the 31st Conference of Francophone cities to be held in Yerevan in 2011.

Mayor Gerlad Tremblay also met with the President of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Serzh Sargsyan. "We highly appreciate the level of the Armenian-Canadian relations and are deeply interested in developing expanding those relations and cooperation. The Canada’s achievements in the global economy are significant, and Armenia can see opportunities and great potential in various areas of cooperation with Canada, " President Sargsyan said. Both sides highly praised the role of Montreal’s Armenian community in strengthening relations between Armenia and Canada.

Welcoming the Mayor of Montreal, Edward Nalbandian, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, commended the intensification of the bilateral relations between Canada and Armenia in recent years, and expressed hope that it would serve as a good basis for comprehensive development of cooperation between the two countries. Minister Nalbandian emphasized that the Armenian-Canadian interaction is also productive in international organizations and that the visit of the Mayor of Montreal would contribute to the decentralized cooperation between Armenia and Canada.

The Canadian delegation was accompanied by His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Canada (Montreal).

Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglarian visited Montreal in July 2009. A twinning agreement between the two cities was signed in 2001.
