John Sloan Becomes New Canadian Ambassador to Armenia

02 November, 2010

On November 2 the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to the Republic of Armenia John Sloan presented his credentials to President Serzh Sargsyan.

The President congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment as Canadian Ambassador to Armenia and wished him success in his tenure.

Serzh Sargsyan and Ambassador Sloan stressed the necessity of full utilization of the existing potential for cooperation in the economic, trade, cultural, local governance and other areas. The parties highlighted also the role of the Armenian-Canadian community in the deepening of the Armenian-Canadian relations.

The Ambassador of Canada spoke with satisfaction about efficient cooperation of the two countries in the framework of international organizations such as the UN and OSCE. He assured the President of Armenia that during his tenure he would do his best to strengthen and enhance the Armenian-Canadian ties in all areas.

Earlier Ambassador John Sloan had meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian, to whom he presented the copies of his credentials. Minister Nalbandian congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment stressing that this year was marked by considerable progress in Armenian-Canadian relations, including political dialogue and parliamentary contacts and decentralized cooperation. He voiced hope that the Ambassador will contribute to the further reinforcement of Armenian-Canadian relations.

John Sloan and Edward Nalbandian attached importance to the cooperation within international organizations and discussed steps aimed at further expansion of bilateral relations. In this context the Minister Nalbandian noted that opening of the Canadian embassy in Armenia is on the agenda.

Ambassador Sloan also met the Minister of Economy, Nerses Yeritsian. The Minister briefed the Ambassador on most prospective spheres of Armenia-Canada cooperation, specifically noting the sectors of information technology, tourism, healthcare, mining industry, diamond processing and jewellery-making. The Ambassador, in turn, expressed his intention to further contribute to strengthening of Armenia-Canada trade and economic relations, which have great potential for dynamic development.
