On May 13th Ambassador Armen Yeganian met with the newly-appointed Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable Leo Housakos and congratulated him upon his appointment.

Afterwards the Senate of Canada reaffirmed its recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the presence of representatives of Armenian Embassy and community.

The statement was brought forward by Senator Thanh Hai Ngo. The declaration referred to the Senate Resolution of 2002, House of Commons Motion of 2004 and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s annual statements  since 2006 that affirm Canada’s recognition of Mets Yeghern. He also referred to the Motion adopted by the House of Commons of Canada last month, which not only reiterated Armenian Genocide recognition, but also designated April 24th as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.
