Memorial unveiling ceremony dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the city of St. Catharines, Ontario

30 April, 2016

On April 30, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Canada, Armen Yeganian, unveiled a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the city of St. Catharines.

Representatives of the federal, provincial and municipal goverment of Canada, diplomats accredited in Toronto, members of the clergy, hundreds of members of the Canadian-Armenian community and journalists attended the event.

The opening ceremony was followed by an official reception held to commemorate the Armenian Genocide. In his speech, Ambassador Yeganian noted that the opening of the monument in St Catharines, dedicated to the Victims of the Armenian Genocide, has immense significance due to the fact that the Armenian community of St. Catharines was the first Armenian community in Canada. The Ambassador expressed his gratitude to Canadian authorities and Canadian-Armenians for their important role in developing Armenian-Canadian relations.

This event was part of an ongoing series of events in Canada dedicated to the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Reference: Some of the famous “Georgetown Boys” lived in St. Catharines. Between 1923 and 1927, with special permission from Canadian authorities, 109 Armenian orphans, aged 8-12, moved to Canada with the assistance of a group of Canadian benefactors and the Armenian Relief Association of Canada. They went on to enroll in Ontario’s Georgetown Farming School for Orphans. This is the reason they were called the “Georgetown Boys”. Today there are many families in Canada who are descendants of the “Georgetown Boys”.
