The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia to Canada, with the support of the Zoryan Institute, is organizing a special film screening of “Aurora’s Sunrise” on April 29 at the Ottawa Art Gallery to mark the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The event is by invitation only. To confirm your attendance, RSVP by assistant.canada@mfa.am. Upon confirmation, you will receive a personal invitation along with the number of guests you wish to attend.

About: Aurora’s Sunrise tells the remarkable and heartbreaking story of Aurora Mardiganian, a 14-year-old girl who survived the horrors of the Armenian Genocide. After witnessing the brutal murder of her family and enduring unimaginable suffering, including sexual slavery and forced servitude, Aurora’s unwavering determination to survive and share her story became her strength. Her journey, fueled by courage and hope, continues to inspire generations worldwide.

The film blends animation with archival footage, including an original 1984 interview with Aurora Mardiganian by the Zoryan Institute and scenes from the 1919 silent film Auction of Souls, in which Aurora portrayed herself. Directed by Inna Sahakyan, Aurora’s Sunrise brings the historical and emotional weight of the genocide to life, creating an educational and creative tribute to the resilience of survivors.

This screening is part of the ongoing efforts by the Zoryan Institute to use oral history archives and animation to preserve the testimonies of genocide survivors, raise awareness about human rights, and empower women and girls globally. Since its premiere in 2022, Aurora’s Sunrise has received acclaim at major international film festivals and has won several prestigious awards, including the Grand Prize at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Switzerland.
