President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Galust Sahakyan visited Canada

The official visit to Canada of Mr. Galust Sahakyan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia took place on May 22-28.

The visit, upon the invitation of two Speakers of Canadian Parliament, was aimed at developing the dynamics of bilateral relations and at discussing in detail the current items in bilateral agenda of friendly countries.

The visit of the Armenian delegation, headed by G.Sahakyan, commenced in Montreal, where the President of the Parliament met his counterpart from the National Assembly of the Province of Quebec Jacques Chagnon and the Mayor of the City of Montreal Denis Coderre. Meetings with the Armenian Community took place, as well.

The visit of the delegation continued in Ottawa, where Mr. Sahakyan had official meetings with the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons and the Honourable Leo Housakos, Speaker of the Senate. During both meetings the sides praised the current level of relations between two parliaments and expressed confidence in future enhancement of the ties.

Speaker Sahakyan met Jason Kenney, Minister of National Defence and Minister for Multiculturalism of Canada. The sides warmly recalled the 2014 July meeting in Yerevan and underlined the need to expand the dialogue on the values bridging our two nations. The Armenian delegation also met the leadership of the Canadian Branch of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie to discuss the cooperation in the frameworks of the International Organisation of la Francophonie.

During the visit of the parliamentary delegation the Chairs of the Friendship Groups in both parliaments, Mr. Hovhannes Sahakyan and Mr. Harold Albrecht, signed a joint declaration reiterating the strong commitment to democracy and a firm willingness to confront common challenges and threats.
