Ambassador Yeganian’s meeting with the Leader of the Official Opposition, Rona Ambrose

 On March 9th, Armen Yeganian, Ambassador of Armenia to Canada, met Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition and interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

At the beginning of the meeting both sides touched upon Armenian-Canadian cooperation in international forums, including in the framework of the International Organization of La Francophonie. In that context, Ambassador Yeganian presented to Mrs. Ambrose the results of the 31st Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie, held in Yerevan in October 2015. His Excellency mentioned that 80 delegations took part in the conference in Yerevan and in hosting this event, Armenia reaffirmed its commitment to the values of La Francophonie.

Ambassador Yeganian briefed Mrs. Ambrose on the commemorative events held on the occasion of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, organized throughout 2015 in several countries, including Canada. Mrs. Ambrose mentioned that she followed the Centennial commemoration events held in Canada closely.

At the request of Mrs. Ambrose, Ambassador Yeganian presented the situation of the Syrian-Armenian refugees, emphasizing the many challenges that they currently face. Mr. Yeganian added that Armenia has given shelter to 20,000 refugees, mostly of Armenian origin but including some from other Christian minorities. Ambassador Yeganian updated Mrs. Ambrose on the efforts to support Syrian-Armenians arriving in Armenia.

Both sides touched upon different issues concerning Armenian-Canadian trade relations. Ambassador Yeganian updated Mrs. Ambrose on the operations of Canadian companies in Armenia with emphasis placed on the role of Canadian mining companies.

At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Yeganian informed Mrs. Ambrose of the upcoming events that will be held to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Independence of Armenia in 2016. His Excellency invited Mrs. Ambrose to take part in the events.

During the meeting interlocutors discussed regional issues as well.

Both sides agreed to maintain regular contact.
