Commemorative events dedicated to memory of Hrant Dink held in Canada

22 January, 2017

A commemorative event dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Hrant Dink’s assassination took place in Montréal on January 21st, organised by the United Organizations of Armenian Community in Quebec. Armen Yeganian, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Canada attended the event.

The keynote speaker of the evening was Cem Özdemir, member of the German Parliament and co-chair of Germany’s Green Party. High ranking diplomats, civil and political actors, journalists, heads of Armenian community bodies and hundreds of Armenian community members from Quebec attended the event.

Ambassador Yeganian spoke highly of the event in his speech, praising the director of the Zorian Institute, Gurgen Sargsyan, and renowned Canadian Armenian figure Raffi Bedrosyan for their work in organizing the event. He proclaimed that as long as there are people in the world who continue Hrant Dink’s work, his memory will never fade. Ambassador expressed gratitude to Mr. Özdemir for his enormous and honorable work and presented him with an award from the Armenian Embassy as a means of expressing this gratitude.

In his speech, Cem Özdemir recalled his friendship with Hrant Dink and emphasized the important role that Dink had in raising awareness of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey. Mr. Özdemir credited Hrant Dink for inspiring him to draft the resolution on the Armenian Genocide that was eventually adopted by the German Bundestag. After his speech Mr. Özdemir answered questions from the audience.

During the evening, a video address by Hrant Dink’s widow, Rakel Dink, was played and followed by a screening of a film about Hrant Dink’s life and work.

A similar event dedicated to memory of Hrant Dink took place on January 22nd in Toronto.
